MILLINOCKET, Maine (AP) — Officials say a hiker has been airlifted from Maine's highest mountain after he was injured by a falling rock.

Sixty-two-year-old Ned Hamara of Texas was hurt after a large rock fell on him Monday afternoon while he was hiking Mount Katahdin at Baxter State Park in Piscataquis County.

Officials say a concerned hiker alerted park rangers to the situation.

The Maine Forest Service used a helicopter to rescue Hamara, who was at an elevation of about 3,900 feet at the time. An ambulance then took him to a hospital with upper and lower body injuries.

Hamara's condition was not available late Monday night.
