TOKYO (AP) _ The U.S. Navy searched in the Indian Ocean today for a missing plane and four crewmen from the aircraft carrier USS Midway, officials said.
The plane, an EA-6B Prowler aircraft assigned to Tactical Electronic Warfare Squadron 136, was reported missing after ''routine'' operations over the Indian Ocean, said the U.S. Forces in Japan media liaison office.
The aircraft was launched from the carrier early Thursday evening, and was declared overdue when it did not return as scheduled about an hour later, the liaison office said in a statement.
Master Gunnery Sgt. Dale Hunter, U.S. military media liaison chief in Japan, said no other information was available about the incident, including the names of the missing crewmen.
The EA-6B carries high-powered electronic jammers and computer-directed radio receivers. The Midway is based in Yokosuka, Japan, but is conducting operations in the Indian Ocean.
