MONTREAL (AP) _ Canada's Eric Lucas successfully defended the WBC super middleweight title Friday night, stopping South Africa's Dingaan Thobela at 2:15 of the eighth round.

Lucas, of Ste-Julie, landed a big right hook that stunned Thobela, and was raining blows on the challenger when referee Laurence Cole stopped the fight.

Lucas improved to 34-4-3. Thobela is 40-9-2.

Lucas won the vacant WBC title with a seventh-round knockout of Glenn Catley of England on July 8. The title was stripped from Dave Hilton Jr. of Montreal in May after he was convicted of sex crimes against two teen-age girls.

Hilton had won the belt from Thobela in a split decision at the Molson Centre last Dec. 15, which the South African appealed, claiming biased judging.
