Gunmen Kill One, Wound 15 Near Courthouse
Jun. 29, 1990
ISTANBUL, Turkey (AP) _ Gunmen opened fire with automatic weapons Friday in front of Istanbul's main courthouse, killing at least one person and wounding 15, the Anatolia news agency reported.
It quoted witnesses as saying the incident occurred after a hearing in the trial of Cemal Sincar, who is charged with the murder of newsman Sami Basaran last year.
The witnesses were reported to have said that two men opened fire indiscriminately on a crowd that had gathered in front of the courthouse.
The assailants escaped, Anatolia said.
Authorities theorized the gunmen may have planned to create panic and try to get Sincar away in the confusion.
Basaran, a reporter for the now defunct Gazete newspaper, was shot to death at Sincar's business office in November. A photographer who was with him at the time was seriously wounded.
The newspaper for which Basaran worked had romantically linked Sincar with a movie actress.
