RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) _ BioDelivery Sciences International Inc. (BDSI) on Thursday reported a loss of $9.8 million in its second quarter.

The Raleigh, North Carolina-based company said it had a loss of 16 cents per share.

The results topped Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of five analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for a loss of 19 cents per share.

The specialty pharmaceutical company posted revenue of $12.2 million in the period, which did not meet Street forecasts. Five analysts surveyed by Zacks expected $12.4 million.

In the final minutes of trading on Thursday, the company's shares hit $2.90. A year ago, they were trading at $3.15.
