SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) _ Senior Sherell Ford's career-high 22 points led the University of Illinois- Chicago to an 87-73 victory over American University of Puerto Rico in the San Juan Shootout on Monday.
The Flames (3-4) outscored the Eagles 17-3 in the first four minutes of play, then capitalized on 20 Eagle turnovers in 12 minutes to take a 40-9 lead, on a 3-pointer by Kenny Williams, with 7:26 left in the half.
After American coach Eddie Gonzalez benched his starting lineup, the Eagles regrouped and rallied.
Led by Angel Romer and Rafael Novas, American (6-2) outscored IUC 22-10 to cut the lead to 50-31 at halftime.
Williams, Ford and Charles Brakes, who finished with 11 points, combined to put UIC back up by 30 at 71-41 with 9:52 to go.
For American, Novas finished with 21 points and Erick Rivera had 15.
