Wife Who Killed Spouse Sent to Psych Unit
Feb. 22, 2003
HOUSTON (AP) _ A woman convicted of running down her cheating husband with her Mercedes-Benz was taken into state custody Friday and locked up in a psychiatric prison.
Clara Harris had been held at the Harris County Jail since Feb. 13, when she was found guilty of killing her 44-year-old orthodontist husband, David, outside the suburban Houston hotel where she had found him with his mistress last summer. She was sentenced to 20 years in prison a day later.
Harris, 45, was transferred Friday to the Skyview psychiatric prison unit near Rusk, about 140 miles north of Houston.
Not all inmates at Skyview receive psychiatric treatment, Texas Department of Criminal Justice spokesman Larry Todd said. He said prison officials cannot comment on whether a particular inmate is receiving such treatment.
``She has been placed in a single cell and she will be counseled through the transition into her prison life,'' Todd said. He added that Harris had been cooperative and eventually could go into the general prison population.
Attorney George Parnham, who represented Harris, said he was not sure why she was moved to a psychiatric unit, but said it could be because of depression.
