GULFPORT, Miss. (AP) — Police on the Mississippi Gulf Coast have released the identity of a man they shot and wounded last week while he ran from a traffic stop.

Gulfport police say an unnamed detective shot 26-year-old Joshua Deandre Jones, a passenger in the vehicle.

Police Sgt. Clayton Fulks tells the Sun Herald that Jones was on probation for robbery, illegally carrying a gun and resisted arrest. He was hospitalized, but later released and booked into jail on a charge of possession of a firearm by a felon.

Jones is jailed without bail because of a probation violation. It's unclear if Jones has a lawyer.

Police haven't described his wounds or how many times he was shot. The Mississippi Bureau of Investigations is leading the inquiry.
