US Speedskating Executive Director Resigns
May. 05, 2006
CLEVELAND, Ohio (AP) _ Katie Marquard resigned Friday as executive director of U.S. Speedskating.
Marquard said she wants to spend more time with her family and pursue other opportunities. She plans to remain on the national board of directors until September to help with the transition.
``As we begin a new quadrennium with a new board in place, this feels like the opportune time to make this transition,'' she said.
During her 16-year tenure, the national office was transformed from a one-person operation to a fully staffed organization that oversees both long and short track speedskating, which have won 34 Olympic medals since 1992.
Marquard, a former speedskater who competed in the 1984 and 1988 Winter Olympics, began with U.S. Speedskating as program director in 1990. She and her husband are coaches at a Cleveland speedskating club.
