SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — A Northern California judge has given a life sentenced to a man who pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting and killing his girlfriend's 6-year-old daughter before setting her body on fire.

Judge Steve White on Tuesday sentenced Juan Rivera to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Rivera pleaded guilty in June to killing Jadianna Larsen in May 2015.

Prosecutors said Rivera killed the child with a blunt instrument, then drove 90 miles (145 kilometers) north of Sacramento and burned her body near a rural road.

Investigators said Rivera returned to Sacramento, where he called 911 and told authorities he had passed out and woke up to find the girl gone.
