FRYEBURG, Maine (AP) — Police in Fryeburg, Maine, say a man has been rescued from the Saco River and treated for hypothermia after he fell in the water.

Acting Police Chief Sgt. Josh Potvin tells WMWV-FM the man had been paddling with others when the group ran into a sudden hailstorm on the river that flipped their boat on Sunday afternoon. The group had deployed their boat at Lovewell pond Landing.

The 50-year-old man told rescuers he nearly drowned after swallowing a lot of water and becoming extremely tired from trying to fight the current.

Potvin says the man, whose name was not released, is extremely fortunate he wasn't seriously hurt.
