Martinez Claims Vacant WBO Title
Sep. 04, 2000
MANCHESTER, England (AP) _ Panama's Mauricio Martinez stopped Nicaragua's Lester Fuentes in the fifth round Monday to take the vacant WBO bantamweight title.
Martinez climbed off the floor three times, twice in the first and again in the fourth, to stun Fuentes with a left hook that left the previously unbeaten fighter into the ropes. A straight right sent Fuentes crashing to the canvas and ended the bout.
Martinez improved to 18-3-1.
In another title bout, England's Anthony Farnell outpointed Mexico's Juan Carlos Sanchez to retain the WBO intercontinental light middleweight title. Farnell is 23-0.
