MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) _ Rahsaan Vanterpool caught two touchdown passes and returned two punts deep into Kent territory Saturday as West Virginia cruised to a 45-6 win.

Kent (1-2-1) of the Mid-American Conference has not beaten a Division I-A nonconference opponent since 1988 and was outgained 550-78. West Virginia (2-2) of the Big East has not lost to a Mid-American team in 11 tries since Don Nehlen arrived as coach in 1980.

Vanterpool weaved 64 yards through Kent's defenders to return a punt to the Golden Flashes' 3 early in the third quarter. Fullback Kantroy Barber ran in for the score on the next play to put West Virginia up 24-0.

Vanterpool also played a large role as the Mountaineers scored twice in two minutes to go up 14-0 just before halftime.

The junior wide receiver returned a punt 26 yards to the Kent 26 midway through the second quarter. Five plays later, Chad Johnston found Lovett Purnell open over the middle, and the tight end lunged over the goal line to put WVU up 7-0.

Kent's special teams made a huge blunder on the ensuing kickoff as running back Joe Nice fumbled at his 27. Johnston found Vanterpool in the corner of the end zone from 8 yards to make it 14-0.

Vanterpool added a 47-yard touchdown reception in the fourth quarter for a 38-0 margin.

Kent's Marc O'Brien was sacked four times in the first half. Kent had just one scoring threat in the first 3 1/2 quarters, with Joseph Romano missing a 35-yard field goal.

Kent tailback Astron Whatley, averaging 138 yards per game, managed just 52 yards on 19 carries against the Mountaineers.

Johnston sat out the fourth quarter. He finished 12 of 20 for 184 yards, two touchdowns and an interception.

Kent's only score came on a 2-yard run by Kantroy Walker after a blocked punt in the fourth quarter.
