Probation for mom of Arizona girl fatally beaten by stepdad
Sep. 13, 2017
PHOENIX (AP) — The mother of a 3-year-old Ahwatukee girl who allegedly was fatally beaten by her stepfather in 2011 has been sentenced to two years of probation for child abuse.
Maricopa County Superior Court officials say Ambreatte Smith was sentenced Wednesday.
Authorities say she knew her then husband was physically abusing her daughter.
Last month, Corey Daniels pleaded guilty to first-degree murder and child abuse. He's scheduled to be sentenced on Nov. 17.
Prosecutors say Daniels was taking care of the child while Smith was at work on Oct. 27, 2011 and he allegedly beat the girl for not eating her dinner and talking back to him.
The child died of her injuries the following day.
Authorities say an autopsy showed the girl had multiple blunt-force trauma injuries and brain swelling.
