Police charge girl for falsely yelling 'school shooter'
Feb. 23, 2018
WOONSOCKET, R.I. (AP) — A Rhode Island middle school student has been charged with disorderly conduct for yelling "school shooter" in what she tells police was a joke.
WJAR-TV reports the 14-year-old girl at Woonsocket Middle School at Hamlet, located outside of Providence, made the comment Feb. 16 as she saw a classmate reach into a backpack. A teacher overheard and alerted police.
Police were already at the scene, as the school had been placed on lockdown after a custodian found live ammunition in the boys' restroom. Police say there is no connection between the student's comments and the bullets found inside the restroom trash can.
Police are still investigating who brought the bullets to school. Chief Thomas Oates says fewer than 10 rounds were found, and they were for a small caliber weapon.
