Phillies Sign Pitcher Paul Byrd
Jan. 29, 2001
PHILADELPHIA (AP) _ Pitcher Paul Byrd, a 1999 All-Star who was sidelined last year by a shoulder injury, agreed Monday to a minor league contract with the Phillies .
Byrd, 30, was 2-9 with a 6.51 ERA last year before being placed on the disabled list June 27. He had arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder and missed the rest of the season.
``We'll give him a chance to come to spring training and show that he's recovered from the shoulder surgery and the back trouble that bothered him off and on,'' Phillies general manager Ed Wade said. ``If he can win a job on the staff, he could be a solid asset for us.''
If Byrd makes the major league roster, he would have a base salary of $600,000 and the chance to make $1.5 million more in performance bonuses.
In 55 career starts with the Phillies, Byrd is 22-21 with a 4.59 ERA.
