SOUTH CONGAREE, S.C. (AP) — Authorities in South Carolina say a man beat a dog with a two-by-four in front of his small child and wife, who also was threatened.

South Congaree Police Chief Josh Shumpert tells The State 26-year-old Mark Anthony Rice was arrested on charges including ill treatment toward animals and criminal domestic violence. Lexington County Animal Control Director Roy Mefford says the department received a video of the beating and arrested Rice with the help of the sheriff's department.

The video shows a man asking a dog "You remember this, don't you?" as he approaches with a wooden board. The man then hits the crying dog repeatedly. The dog, a Cane Corso, is alive. That dog, two others and a cat were seized from the home. They will undergo medical examinations and stay at a shelter.
