US Sen. Markey: Obama right to push gun research
Mar. 05, 2014
BOSTON (AP) — U.S. Sen. Edward Markey says President Barack Obama made the right call by including $10 million in his federal budget proposal for gun violence research.
The funding was included in Obama's proposed budget for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
Obama last year lifted a 17-year ban on federal gun violence research, but there has been no funding set aside for the effort.
Markey said the research funding will generate better information about the causes of gun violence and what can be done to prevent it.
The funding is far from certain.
Obama's previous budgets failed to win support in Congress and his latest proposal will likely meet the same fate.
Instead, Congress is likely to adhere to last year's mini budget deal as it looks ahead to midterm elections this fall.
