LOS ANGELES (AP) — A civil lawsuit claims a slaying of a female resident at a group home for adults with developmental disabilities was "preventable."

The Los Angeles Daily News reports a complaint filed last week in the Los Angeles Superior Court says Dawn Marie Ritz was allegedly stabbed in May in her bed more than 100 times by Ravneet Kaur, another resident who had obtained an unsecured kitchen knife at the Aacres facility in Los Angeles.

The lawsuit, which names Aacres, its overseer Embassy Management, LLC and the home's administrator as defendants, claims the residents had been in an ongoing dispute.

Neither an Aacres executive nor a Embassy Management spokeswoman responded Monday to requests for comment.

Kaur pleaded not guilty to one count of murder and faces life in prison if convicted.
