BOURG-EN-BRESSE, France (AP) _ A steamroller fell off a flatbed truck that ran out of control Wednesday, smashing into a school bus and killing the bus driver and a 12-year-old girl, police said.

Three other young girls were seriously injured in the morning accident. It occurred when the driver of the flatbed lost control of his vehicle as it rounded a sharp corner in the town of Coutelieu, in southeast France.

The 14-ton steamroller flew off the truck bed and smashed into the school bus, according to police.

The 23 other children in the bus and four adults accompanying them were shaken up by the accident, which occurred during a heavy rainfall, police said.

The bus driver was killed immediately. The young girl, seriously injured, was taken by helicopter to a Lyon hospital, where she died hours later.

''It was like I was driving on ice,'' the police quoted the flatbed driver as saying.
