American Express Announces New Upscale Charge Card For Executives
Feb. 20, 1991
NEW YORK (AP) _ American Express Co. Wednesday unveiled a new charge card aimed at traveling executives, who can use the plastic for services ranging from hiring temporary help to cashing a $5,000 personal check.
The financial services giant said the gold Executive Corporate Card, which costs $100 annually, offers a broader array of amenities than its standard green Corporate Card, which has been issued since 1970.
American Express said the new card, to be issued starting this month to a limited number of existing Corporate Card members, was designed especially for executives of small and medium-sized businesses.
One of the card's principal enhancements is providing access to an in-house Executive Service Desk, which the company described as a 24-hour, one-stop resource that can rearrange travel plans, secure last-minute visas, hire translators and other temporary staff, plan meetings, deliver messages and offer local business etiquette advice.
The new card also enables executives on the road to obtain up to $100,000 in accident insurance coverage and increased check cashing privileges not available through other cards.
American Express is one of the world's leading charge card providers. Besides its corporate cards for businesses and the standard green-colored card for consumers, it offers the more upscale gold and platinum cards, as well as the Optima revolving-charge card, which is akin to a credit card.
