Karl Appointed U.S. Climate Chief

WASHINGTON (AP) _ Climate researcher Thomas Karl has been named director of the government's National Climatic Data Center.
Karl is senior scientist at the Asheville, N.C., center, part of the Commerce Department's National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
A leading researcher into long-term changes in weather, Karl's work has been a major part of the current debate over ways to cope with global atmospheric changes.
A graduate of the University of Wisconsin, Karl is chairman of the National Academy of Sciences Climate Research Committee.
