Verlander scattered five hits and struck out eight over seven shutout innings as the Astros knocked off the New York Yankees 7-1. Altuve delivered a solo homer and a two-run single to lead Houston's eight-hit attack.

UNDATED (AP) — The Detroit Tigers hired a manager yesterday, while the Washington Nationals fired theirs. The Tigers have brought in Ron Gardenhire, who won 1,068 games and six division titles in 13 seasons with the Minnesota Twins before he was dismissed in the fall of 2014. Dusty Baker has been let go in Washington despite winning division titles in each of his two years at the helm.

NEW YORK (AP) — Oakland Raiders running back Marshawn Lynch has received a one-game suspension without pay from the NFL for shoving a game official during Thursday's victory over Kansas City. Lynch was ejected from the game after he shoved line judge Julian Mapp. He will be eligible to return to the active roster following next Sunday's game against the Bills.

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) — Martin Truex Jr. will start from the pole for NASCAR's playoff race at Kansas Speedway on Sunday. He was followed by playoff contenders Kevin Harvick, Ryan Blaney, Matt Kenseth and Denny Hamlin in today's qualifying. Truex was already assured of advancing to the round of eight after his win at Charlotte.

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Bernhard Langer fired a 6-under 67 to move into a four-way tie for the lead heading into the second round of the PGA Tour Champions event in Richmond, Va. Langer birdied the par-5 18th and pulled even with Rocco Mediate, David Toms and Joe Durant, one shot ahead of Jay Don Blake, Olin Browne and Glen Day. Mediate had four birdies on the back nine in a bogey-free round.
