SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) _ Troy Murphy scored a career-high 37 points, including eight in the final 4:12, as No. 21 Notre Dame beat Rutgers 87-80 Saturday night.
Murphy made four free throws and a 10-foot jumper after Rutgers closed within 80-77 on Todd Billet's 3-pointer with 2:02 remaining.
The Irish (9-3, 1-1 Big East) tried to go inside to Murphy again, but he was double-teamed and passed back outside to Matt Carroll, who hit a 3-pointer. Murphy added a pair of free throws to secure the win.
Notre Dame's 87 points were the most allowed by the Scarlet Knights this season. Rutgers, which had yielded an average of 59.1 points, hadn't allowed an opponent to break 80 before Saturday. The 60.8 percent shooting by the Irish was also a season high against Rutgers (8-5, 0-2).
Ryan Humphrey scored 17 points, David Graves added 16 and Martin Ingelsby had a career-high 13 assists for the Irish.
Jeff Greer led Rutgers with 26 points. Billet shot 4-for-8 from 3-point range and had 20 points, and Mike Sherrod added 15.
The Irish parlayed a 9-1 run at the end of the first half with a 9-3 run at the start of the second into a 51-39 lead.
Rutgers used an 11-6 spurt to close within 57-50, but the Irish countered with a 9-0 run for a 66-50 advantage.
Notre Dame led by as many as seven points twice in the first half. Rutgers used an 11-2 run to take a 35-33 lead with 2:35 left in the half.
The Irish closed the period with a 9-1 run and led 42-36 at the break. Murphy had 20 points in the first half.
