Nov. 12, 2000
DORADO, Puerto Rico (AP) _ Vicente Fernandez, the last seeded player in a 16-man field, birdied the first hole of a sudden-death playoff against Leonard Thompson to win the Chrysler Senior Match Play Challenge on Sunday.
The victory was worth $240,000 for the Argentine, who reached the final earlier Sunday by defeating 13th-seeded Ray Floyd 4 and 3, with the help of seven birdies.
The 10th-seeded Thompson, who earned $120,000, beat No. 14 Lanny Wadkins 2 and 1 in the other semifinal.
In the championship match, over the Robert Trent Jones-designed layout on the East Course at Hyatt Dorado Beach, Thompson tied it with a birdie at 17. He and Fernandez then bogeyed the 18th hole, forcing the playoff, which began at the first hole.
Fernandez took the lead in the final at No. 2 and never relinquished it. He increased the lead to 3-up by No. 10, before Thompson rallied with birdies at Nos. 12, 14 and 17.
