AP FACT CHECK: Trump adrift on tax rates, Canada, econ lingo
May. 12, 2017
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump talked trade, taxes and more in an interview with The Economist magazine. An AP Fact Check finds some of his statements were off base.
He wrongly claimed that the U.S. has the world's highest taxes. He said the U.S. runs a trade deficit with Canada, when in fact it's a surplus.
And he claimed to have coined the economic phrase "prime the pump," which has been familiar to economists for some 80 years.
Trump also persisted in claiming that China stopped manipulating its currency for unfair trade advantage when he began criticizing that behavior. China ceased currency manipulation in mid-2014, a year before be opened his presidential primary campaign.
