Weekend soup kitchen closes due to high expenses
Aug. 17, 2018
BRISTOL, Conn. (AP) — The only soup kitchen that serves a Connecticut community hot meals during the weekend has closed.
The Bristol Press reports the Rev. Dean Desjardins said the soup kitchen at the Christian Fellowship Center in Bristol is closed as of Friday.
Desjardins says the soup kitchen was part of the center's Storehouse program which was shut down after 25 years of operation.
He says the closure was due to high expenses, including utility costs for an extra-large freezer.
Desjardins says the soup kitchen typically served 50 meals on Fridays and 100 meals on Saturdays and Sundays.
Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church serves hot dinners Monday through Thursday, and the Salvation Army has a lunchtime soup kitchen Monday through Thursday.
