SEC Reprimands Two Coaches
Dec. 18, 1998
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) _ Letters of ``admonishment and reprimand'' were sent by the SEC to Florida coach Billy Donovan and South Carolina coach Eddie Fogler because of comments made at last month's conference media days.
Fogler had questioned Florida's recruiting practices.
Without mentioning names, Fogler said a former SEC basketball player had put together a 10-day trip to France last summer that benefited another league school.
His comments made it clear he was referring to a trip made by Florida freshman Mike Miller, two Gator recruits, a Mississippi State recruit and two top prep prospects.
Fogler was referring to former Kentucky player Bret Bearup as the financial manager, although Bearup was not mentioned by name.
Bearup's company, Atlanta-based Pro Trust, sponsored the trip to France in late August. Bearup has said he made sure the trip followed NCAA regulations.
In retaliation, Donovan said, ``For (Fogler) to attack my integrity and the integrity of anyone from Florida shows he doesn't have enough class, enough courage to come right out and confront me about it ... it shows absolutely no guts on his part.''
A statement from the SEC on Friday said officials investigated the issues raised in the comments and found no evidence that conference or NCAA recruiting regulations were violated.
Donovan said he didn't have a problem with Fogler before the incident.
``I do have a problem with him now,'' he has said.
