FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) _ Luxury cruises are in the money.

Among the guests aboard the 1,316-passenger Rotterdam when it sailed from Port Everglades on Thursday were four couples who each booked a penthouse verandah suite costing more than $275,000 for a 96-day global cruise, according to officials from Holland America Line, the ship's Seattle-based owner.

Beverages, tips, shopping and shore excursions easily can add an additional 40 percent to a cruise vacation's tab, said cruise line officials.

Some 925 guests were booked for the entire three-month itinerary at fares ranging from $27,000 to $138,000 per passenger. Holland America said that was an increase of more than 50 percent from the number taking the world cruise last year.

Most remaining cabins were filed by travelers taking just parts of the route.

The cruise includes stops at 40 different ports on five continents, including Antarctica and Midway Island in the Pacific.
