How the Dow Jones industrial average fared on Thursday

Stocks ended mostly lower after a volatile day as traders tried to figure out what was next for U.S. interest rates. The bumpy trading came after the Federal Reserve decided to keep interest rates low for now, citing weakness in the global economy and unsettled financial markets.
The Dow Jones industrial average lost 65.21 points, or 0.4 percent, to 16,674.74.
The Standard & Poor's 500 index fell 5.11 points, or 0.3 percent, to close at 1,990.20.
The Nasdaq composite rose 4.71 points, or 0.1 percent, to 4,893.95.
For the week:
The Dow is up 241.65 points, or 1.5 percent.
The S&P 500 index is up 29.15 points, or 1.5 percent.
The Nasdaq is up 71.61 points, or 1.5 percent.
For the year:
The Dow is down 1,148.33 points, or 6.4 percent.
The S&P 500 index is down 68.70 points, or 3.3 percent.
The Nasdaq is up 157.89 points, or 3.3 percent.
