WATERVILLE VALLEY, N.H. (AP) — A team of rescuers has helped carry an injured hiker to safety from Welch Mountain near Waterville Valley, N.H.

The New Hampshire Fish and Game Department says 49-year-old James Lewis of Beverly, Mass., had hiked to the summit on Thursday afternoon. As he was descending, he tripped and suffered a leg injury.

A passing hiker called 911 for help. Rescuers reached Lewis at about 2:45 p.m. and carried about a mile to the trailhead. He was taken to a hospital for treatment.

Fire-rescue teams from Waterville Valley, Campton-Thornton, and others assisted.
