BOLOGNA, Italy (AP) _ Colombia struggled for the first half before coming through with goals from Bernardo Redin and Carlos Valderrama on Saturday to beat the United Arab Emirates 2-0.
Redin ended Colombia's frustation in the 50th minute when he steered home a pinpoint cross from Leonel Alvarez following one of the first smooth Colombian moves in the opening match in Group D of the World Cup tournament.
Five minutes from the end, Valderrama took on the UAE defense on his own, beat his defender and sent a low 20-yard drive out of reach of goalie Faraj Mushin.
Colombia also needed some good goalkeeping from Rene Higuita to keep cat- quick striker Adnan Khamees Al Taliyani from scoring the UAE's first World Cup goal ever.
The outsiders kept up with Colombia during the first half with slick combination play and fast counterattacks, but failed to pressure Colombia once they trailed.
