PARIS (AP) — Paris is celebrating. The city erupted in firecrackers, flares and shouts and tears of joy after France advanced to the World Cup final. Red smoke rose up from flares fired by fans on the Right Bank esplanade outside City Hall, where crowds watched a broadcast of the 1-0 victory over Belgium on huge screen. France will face the winner of tomorrow's semifinal between England and Croatia in the World Cup decider in Moscow on Sunday.
PITTSBURGH (AP) — The Washington Nationals won't have their All-Star closer when they face the Pirates in Pittsburgh tonight. They've placed Sean Doolittle on the 10-day disabled list with left toe inflammation. He tripped over a pitching mound three days ago. The left-hander has a 1.45 ERA and has converted 22 of 23 save opportunities this season.
NEW YORK (AP) — Two starting pitchers are making e their major league debuts in New York tonight as the Phillies and Mets continue their four-game series. Philadelphia called up 22-year-old RHP Enyel De Los Santos from Triple-A Lehigh Valley. New York summoned 28-year-old RHP Drew Gagnon from Triple-A Las Vegas.
UNDATED (AP) — Retired Houston Astros first-base coach Rich Dauer will be among the coaches for the American League at next week's All-Star game. Dauer was a part of Houston's World Series championship last season, but was rushed to a hospital immediately after the team's victory parade — surviving a difficult surgery on a blood clot in his brain.
EL SEGUNDO, Calif. (AP) — The Los Angeles Lakers have signed veteran Lance Stephenson and second-round pick Svi Mykhailiuk (svee mih-KAH'-lehk). Stephenson agreed to a one-year, $4.5 million deal to join LeBron James, Rajon Rondo and JaVale McGee in the Lakers' influx of veteran talent. Stephenson appeared in all 82 games for Indiana last season, averaging 9.2 points, 5.2 rebounds and 2.9 assists per game. The Lakers are his seventh NBA franchise entering his ninth season.
