TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) _ Florida State starting nose guard Jeff Womble was suspended for the season opener against Duke for violating team rules, coach Bobby Bowden announced Wednesday.

Womble, who started 11 games last season, was arrested with defensive end O.J. Jackson for misdemeanor possession of marijuana this summer. Jackson has not been suspended.

Redshirt freshman Travis Johnson will start at nose guard in Saturday's game.

``I told (the defensive players) before practice, `Some of you are going to get an opportunity that you didn't know you were going to get,''' Bowden said.

Womble is one of only four returning defensive starters from last season's team. He recorded 49 tackles and three sacks in 2000.
