PHELPS, N.Y. (AP) — Authorities say a 69-year-old man is recovering from burns suffered when fuel spilled inside his car at an upstate New York racetrack.
The Ontario County Sheriff's Office says 69-year-old Michael Humphrey, of Oswego, had just completed a practice session at Paradise Speedway in the town of Phelps on Saturday when his micro-sprint car stalled, then burst into flames.
Other racers and fans ran to the car, put out the fire and pulled Humphrey out of the vehicle.
Deputies say the car's fuel line became disconnected from the engine, causing gasoline to leak on the vehicle's floor. Police say the fuel ignited when Humphrey tried to restart the car.
Officials say he suffered third-degree burns over 60 percent of his body. He's being treated at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester.
