Aug. 26, 1999
CALCUTTA, India (AP) _ Thousands of people on Thursday joined nuns of the Missionaries of Charity to pray for the late Mother Teresa, who began her work with the poor and needy in this eastern metropolis.
In a message on what would have been Mother Teresa's 89th birthday, her successor at the Missionaries of Charity, Sister Nirmala, said: ``We thank God for the gift that Mother has been to each of us and to the whole world.''
Hundreds of school children were among the visitors at the tomb of Mother Teresa, who died in Calcutta two years ago.
``It's a feeling of joy and at the same time we miss her very much,'' Sister Nirmala said. ``On this day, we rededicate ourselves so that we can carry on the work that Mother used to do.''
