Cambodian Factory Workers Strike
Jan. 04, 2001
PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (AP) _ Hundreds of shoe factory workers in southern Cambodia demanded an end to mandatory overtime Thursday, staging a rare labor protest outside the capital, police said.
Opposition politicians joined the demonstration with workers at the New Star Shoes Factory in the coastal town of Sihanoukville, 115 miles southwest of Phnom Penh. Police said the strike so far had been peaceful.
Independent unions have been permitted to protest in Cambodia for the past four years, but most of their activities have been in the capital. Last year, protests at textile factories in Phnom Penh forced a $5 increase in the monthly minimum wage, to $45.
