VIENNA, Austria (AP) _ Top-seeded Thomas Muster fought his way to the second round of the CA Trophy tournament Wednesday, defeating unseeded Gianluca Pozzi of Italy 7-5, 6-4.
Third-seeded Yevgeny Kafelnikov of Russia defeated David Prinosil of Germany, 7-6 (7-2), 6-2.
No. 5 seed Boris Becker of Germany outlasted Australian Mark Woodforde 7-6 (7-2), 3-6, 6-4.
Sixth-seeded Marcelo Rios of Chile lost his first-round match to Arnaud Boetsch of France 6-2, 6-4 in just 61 minutes.
Muster, the local favorite, will play Sweden's Stefan Edberg in the second round Thursday. Edberg won his opening round match Tuesday.
``I have to improve enormously, have to do everything better. Otherwise, there's no chance against Stefan. He's the favorite,'' Muster said after the first round match, in which he missed a break at 5-4 that would have given him the first set. He had to play out two more games before Pozzi turned in a bad service game allowing Muster to clinch the set 7-5.
In the second set, Muster led 4-1 before a rebreak helped Pozzi to even the score. But Muster retook control of the game and won on his third chance to break the Italian and take the match.
