Agassi, Becker Withdraw
Apr. 20, 1999
MONTE CARLO, Monaco (AP) _ Andre Agassi and Boris Becker withdrew from the Monte Carlo Open today, Agassi because of a shoulder injury and Becker because of his father's death.
Agassi, the No. 7 seed, will be replaced in the draw by 27-year-old Italian Vincenzo Santopadre.
Agassi was due to play Frenchman Arnaud Di Pasquale in the second round on Wednesday.
Becker withdrew when he learned his father, Karl-Heinz Becker, had died of stomach cancer.
``I am very, very sad,'' Becker said. ``I admired my father and I owe him a lot. In this difficult situation I have to and want to be close to my family. Especially my mother needs me.''
Becker, who plays a limited schedule, beat Cedric Pioline in the first round Monday. He was to have played Jerome Golmard of France in the second round.
