Petty May Switch to Dodge in 2001
Nov. 08, 1999
CHARLOTTE (AP) _ Petty Enterprises will switch its Winston Cup teams from Pontiacs to Dodges beginning with the 2001 racing season, the Charlotte Observer reported today.
The newspaper, citing a General Motors source, said Pontiac officials were notified of the switch.
The Petty operation fields the No. 43 Pontiac for driver John Andretti and Kyle Petty's No. 44 Grand Prix.
Adam Petty, the family's fourth-generation driver who is competing on the Grand National circuit, is expected to move up to NASCAR's top circuit as soon as 2001. That's also DaimlerChrysler's first year back in the series with the Dodge Intrepid.
Richard Petty scored 175 of his all-time Winston Cup record 200 career victories in Chrysler vehicles.
Ray Evernham, the crew chief for Jeff Gordon's three Winston Cup championship seasons at Hendrick Motorsports, left that team in September to spearhead Chrysler's return to the sport.
