Versace Dress Sells for $47,000
Nov. 10, 1997
MILAN, Italy (AP) _ A dress created by designer Gianni Versace in his final collection and picked out by Princess Diana weeks before her death has been sold at auction for $47,000.
Versace's press office said the evening gown, a black tailleur with a white silk neck, was one of six dresses Diana chose from Versace's last high-fashion collection, shown in Paris on July 5 _ 10 days before the designer was gunned down outside his Miami Beach mansion.
The name of the buyer was not disclosed. Proceeds from the auction Sunday night went to the Italian Association for Cancer Research.
The other five outfits will be put up for auction as well, the Versace press office said.
Versace's sister, Donatella, has taken over designing for the label since his July 15 slaying.
Princess Diana was killed in a high-speed car crash in Paris on Aug. 31.
