LONDON (AP) _ The British rally championship was canceled for the first time in its 43-year history Tuesday because of foot-and-mouth disease.

Yorkshire's Trackrod Rally was called off by the Motor Sports Association on Tuesday, the fifth consecutive round to be abandoned.

That followed the cancellation of events in Wales; Cumbria, in northern England; Northern Ireland; and the Isle of Man. Race routes were in areas hit by the contagious animal disease and quarantined.

``By our own rules, once the number of remaining events went below three, we had no alternative but to cancel the entire championship,'' MSA chief executive Colin Hilton said.

The Scottish Rally, on Sept. 15-16, and the Jim Clark Memorial Rally, on Dec. 7-9, will no longer count toward the series.
