Judge Alfred C. Harrell to Receive the 2018 American Inns of Court Professionalism Award for the Tenth Circuit

ALEXANDRIA, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug 17, 2018--Judge Alfred C. Harrell has been recognized with the prestigious 2018 American Inns of Court Professionalism Award for the Tenth Circuit. He will be presented with the award by the Honorable Deanell Reece Tacha at the Tenth Circuit Judicial Conference in Colorado Springs in August.
Harrell was a judge on the Denver County Court in Colorado from 1985 to 2016. After his retirement, he and a colleague founded the Symposium on Race, a monthly conversation among concerned citizens about matters relating to race and class issues in the United States. He continues to host a regular Thursday morning breakfast for judges, lawyers, and students.
Harrell was instrumental in helping to establish five American Inns of Court in Colorado, including, most recently, the Justice Sonia Sotomayor American Inn of Court. He is a Master of the Bench in the Robert C. Rhone–Ava M. Brackett American Inn of Court, and an Emeritus Member of the Judge William E. Doyle American Inn of Court, both in Denver. He served two terms on the American Inn of Court Board of Trustees from 1994 to 1996 and 2000 to 2004.
A volunteer instructor at the National Institute for Trial Advocacy, Harrell donates his time to lead general public programs as well as those for lawyers in public service. He is also a lecturer at the University of Colorado and the University of Denver College of Law.
Harrell has received many honors during his career, which include the Sam Cary King Trimble Lifetime Achievement Award in 2015 and the University of Denver Sturm College of Law Robert H. McWilliams Alumni Professionalism Award in 2016.
Harrell completed his undergraduate education at the University of Colorado, which honored him with its George Norlin Lifetime Achievement Award in 1997. He earned his JD at University of Denver School of Law.
