PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Police say a man asking people in passing cars for money on a Providence street was chased into a coffee shop and beaten by the occupants of one vehicle.

The 28-year-old victim told police has was at an intersection Sunday asking for money when two men got out of their vehicle and swore at him.

Police tell The Providence Journal the victim ran into a Dunkin' Donuts. The men followed, and one hit him over the head with a chair, while another hit him with a floor mopping sign. The assailants also punched the victim before fleeing.

The victim said he didn't want to press charges, but the store manager said she saw the entire thing and got a license plate number.

No names were released.
