AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) — A Maine man has pleaded guilty to sexual assault charges in order to forgo a trial and appeal earlier decisions in the case regarding his competency.

Twenty-three-year-old Travis Gerrier entered a conditional guilty plea Monday at court in Augusta, saying he plans to challenge earlier rulings where he was found competent to stand trial. The Kennebec Journal reports (http://bit.ly/2x95vSW ) in Maine, defendants can withdraw their plea if they prevail on appeal.

Prosecutors say Gerrier sexually assaulted an 11-year-old girl in a parking lot two years ago.

Gerrier had previously pleaded not guilty to the charges. On Monday, Gerrier's attorney said she was unsure if he would remember what happened at the hearing.

A sentencing hearing for Gerrier is expected to be scheduled in about two months.
