Two Ohio Police Officers Shot
May. 24, 1996
DAYTON, Ohio (AP) _ A gunman killed a man Thursday then drove to a police station and shot two officers. One officer and the suspect died later, according to the police chief and a television station.
Officer Jason Grossnickle, 25, a homicide detective's son who had been on the force since February, died at one hospital, Police Chief Ron Lowe said. WDTN-TV said the suspect died at a different one.
The hospitals, police and the Montgomery County coroner's office would not comment on the report, nor would they identify the suspect.
Officer Robert Cleaver was shot in the chin and was in serious condition. He was a classmate of Grossnickle's at the police academy and also joined the force in February.
Police received a report of a shooting at a company several blocks from the station. As several officers were responding to the call and other officers were reporting to work, a van pulled up to the station, the driver got out and opened fire on Grossnickle and Cleaver, Lowe said.
``We believe the officers returned fire,'' Lowe said.
The suspect had shot a man earlier after arguing at a business about seven blocks from the station, he said.
``We have no idea what precipitated these incidents,'' Lowe said.
