La Salle Fires Coach Speedy Morris
Mar. 10, 2001
PHILADELPHIA (AP) _ Speedy Morris was fired Friday after 15 years as basketball coach at La Salle, which has not had a winning record since 1993.
The firing came a day after No. 21 St. Joseph's defeated La Salle 82-74 in the Atlantic 10 tournament, ending a 12-17 season.
Morris had a 239-202 record with the Explorers. He had a year left on his contract.
``Speedy Morris has contributed much to La Salle University and the La Salle basketball program during his 15 years as head coach. Those contributions have made this decision difficult,'' athletic director Thomas Brennan said.
``The progress of the program, however, has not been at the level we want to see,'' he said. ``Therefore, we are making this change now.''
Morris bemoaned a lack of talent.
``We just didn't get enough good players,'' he said. ``You need more than three or four, you need six, seven.''
Morris said the Explorers were ``a bunch of great kids who tried and competed ... Bottom line is we didn't win enough games.''
Brennan had made the decision to fire Morris earlier in the season _ he declined to specify when _ but said he wanted to wait until the season was over.
A search for Morris' replacement will begin immediately, Brennan said.
