Dow Jumps 69 in Early Trading
Jan. 16, 1998
NEW YORK (AP) _ Stock prices are higher in very heavy trading. The Dow Jones Industrial Average is up 69 points in today's early going. Gainers on the New York Stock Exchange hold a 5-1 lead over losers.
The Nasdaq Composite Index has gained 13 points and the Standard & Poor's 500 Stock Index is ahead six points.
Stocks are moving ahead after getting the green light from overseas markets.
Asian stocks put in a sharp recovery today, with Tokyo's main stock index leading the way.
The Asian advance helped push European stocks sharply higher as well.
Even with the strong opening, analysts warn the market could see some choppiness today, as well as some heavy trading.
That's because of today's expiration of certain stock and stock index options.
The so-called double-witching expirations usually lead to a surge in volume and a touch more volatility.
