Undated (AP) _ Fog and clouds covered most of the East and South today as humidity remained high but temperatures inched lower.
Scattered showers were expected across much of the Northeast, with heavy rainfall east of the Appalachians. On Thursday night, thunderstorms drenched southeastern Pennsylvania, shutting down Philadelphia International Airport for two hours and leaving up to 73,000 homes in darkness. No injuries were reported.
The Southeast also was expected to remain warm and humid today, with temperatures in the 90s and scattered afternoon thunderstorms across the lower Tennessee Valley and central Gulf Coast. In flooded areas of southwestern Georgia, there was a 30 percent chance of thunderstorms this afternoon.
Considerable sunshine was likely across the west Great Lakes region, with temperatures in the 70s and 80s.
Scattered thunderstorms were forecast for the Plains, with temperatures in the 80s and 90s. Thunderstorms with winds over 80 mph on Thursday knocked out power to thousands in Oklahoma and flooded streets. No one was hurt.
The West was expected to be mostly sunny and hot today, with temperatures from the 90s as far north as the Columbia River Valley to more than 110 in the Southwest deserts. Thunderstorms were likely in the northern Rockies.
The highest temperature in the country Thursday was 121 degrees at Death Valley, Calif.
