NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. (AP) _ Two teen-agers swimming in an ocean inlet were bitten by sharks as they swam off New Smyrna Beach.
Danielle Shidemantle, 19, of Lake Mary, was swimming at about 2:50 p.m. Sunday when what was described as a 3-foot-long shark bit her upper left thigh, Volusia County Deputy Beach Chief Joe Wooden said.
A little more than two hours later, Amber Benningfield, a 13-year-old girl from Bowling Green, Ky., was bitten in her left calf. The attacks were within a few yards of each other off New Smyrna Beach.
Shidemantle was treated and released, but Benningfield was admitted to a hospital and listed in stable condition.
The sharks were probably black tip or spinner sharks, Wooden said.
